As international holidays were off limits this year - our intention had been to spend an extended time in a German speaking country over the summer - we finally had our family holiday in October, staying at a farm in Devon. This was self catering, in a lovely cottage, together with the in-laws: great fun for the kids, and wonderfully relaxing for us adults!
One of the highlights for the kids was that they got to feed the chickens at the farm and collect their eggs at "chicken o'clock", and most days we simply went to a beach and spent the day... looking at the wildlife in rockpools, playing with new friends, going body boarding (in full rain gear!!! because that wasn't planned...) - the kids are now fully set on body boards and wetsuits for Christmas. Chickens, however, won't be on the presents list this year I'm afraid!
Clovelly was nearby and the day we went it was bathed in stunning autumn sunshine...
Beaches provided hours of enjoyment and relaxation...
Westward Ho! was rainy, though not terribly cold, and the kids met some children with body boards and very quickly decided to join them in the water!...
Chicken o'Clock was the kids' absolute favourite, we had to be back at the farm by 5pm each day so they could feed the chickens and collect their eggs...
Dartington Crystal glass factory was quite fascinating, although of course nothing interactive was available due to Covid.
On our way home, the only truly bad weather day we experienced, we came across a little steam railway and made a quick stop for a trip on the steam train, and afterwards going across Exmoor we came across a few local cattle...
It's good to be home again, but this was a holiday we all badly needed and much enjoyed!
