I've decided to rebrand our social distancing. There are so many ways to make it a positive experience, and we might as well do that rather than be miserable!
So, we're on Staycation Island. It's a holiday where we don't go away, but we're an island as a family... and as with any stranded-on-an-island scenario, we don't know how long we have to stay!
On Staycation Island, we want to make the most of our days. Connect, play, have quality time together. But because we're alone on our island, we need to put in a bit of structure so we don't end up wasting our days and getting fed up with each other and with our island.
Some things we will aim to do every day:
As there are no other people on this island, we find it's a perfect time to stick consistently to German as our language. All TV is German, and as the only people we speak to are each other (excepting video calls), so hopefully that's a bit of a boot camp for the kids' language skills.

Glorious weather on Day 3 of Staycation Island! |
On Staycation Island, we want to make the most of our days. Connect, play, have quality time together. But because we're alone on our island, we need to put in a bit of structure so we don't end up wasting our days and getting fed up with each other and with our island.
Some things we will aim to do every day:
- Go out, just into nature: woods, streams, nature reserves, beaches, scoot, cycle, treasure hunt, geocache...
- Exercise: play, wrestle, follow a video, jump on the trampoline in the garden...
- Connect out: video calls to grandparents, auntie, friends...
- Read aloud: this is a great time for longer books as we have nowhere else to be!
- Pray: again, because we've got all day to ourselves, we can pray together for as long as we like, as often as we like, each day.
- Craft / creativity: I'll admit, crafts aren't my thing. 2 hours setup for 5 minutes' fun and then pandemonium. But, I'll do my best to enable a bit of craftiness.
- Free play: lots and lots and lots.
