The Mombasa leg of our trip began in a sad note - it felt like there was a big hole where N(5) and my lovely wife should have been. They were staying behind in Nairobi at the hospital to make sure N recovered from her pneumonia. As with most outings in Kenya the journey was a long one on the train that ran through the national park to the east coast.
We kept our eyes peeled to see if we could spot some of the nig game wildlife... we saw some elephants, gazelle and wildebeest. They were a little far away but it was as close as we would come to our own safari!
The trip would also be provide the longest time that D and Daddy had spent exclusively together. Time for the boys to have fun! I was a little concerned that he might struggle without Mummy cuddles but it turned to be less of an issue than anticipated.
The first day exploring Mombasa began with a visit to Fort Jesus. (a fort built by the Portuguese to defend the port)
And later a walk around the old town ............
Where we came across the Africa Hotel. The 'first' hotel in Kenya, and the location for the opening scenes of the Leonardo Di-Caprio movie 'Inception'.
Then we visited a workshop which employs local people with mental or physical disabilities that wouldn't otherwise find work. They produce all manner of textile goods which were sold in their shop across the road.

As it was just D(3) and Daddy going on the trip it was a rare opportunity for D to bond with the other little girl in our party. It was sweet to see how their relationship developed.

D showed his appreciation of their work with the purchase of a 'whale'. He was very pleased with his purchase!
Next on the schedule was a visit to Mamba Park to learn all about crocodiles and get up close and personal........
And he got to meet a camel called 'Masala'.....
Finally it was time for some well earned RnR in the facilities of the Sarova Whitesands beach hotel. D's confidence in the pool was growing and after he persuaded Daddy to buy him some 'water wings' he began to swim around on his own!
Sadly the end of our Mombasa experience came around quickly, but we had missed N and Mummy and were eager to be reunited!
